The Savannah, Ga., native once weighed 700 pounds. Her goal: 145. "Sometimes people don't understand it," said Ruby Gettinger by telephone from Savannah, Ga., where she lives. "I'm a very happy person. They ask me, 'Ruby, if you had to do it all over again, would you be big or small?' I always say I'd rather be big. Because I feel like I'm a better person because of it because I don't judge people. And I'm not mean. I like the person I am. That may sound ironic to somebody, but if you were able to sit on the side and see how mean people can be, you'd understand why I never want to be those kind of people."

If that doesn't make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside during Christmas, I don't know what will.

Dave Thomas, programming book author and Ruby evangelist presented the keynote at RailsConf2008; "There's a sound that no presenter wants to hear, and that's dead silence. And that's what greeted me when I made a suggestion in my RubyConf keynote [...]. I think by the end of the talk, though, most people were convinced." This is one of the best programming topic presentations I have ever seen. Even if you've never written a line of Ruby, you'll find it perfectly clear-and enjoyable. Watch, and then "read more" for Kroc's personal commentary on the issues raised.

While I agree that Ruby on Rails was the leading web development framework in 2008, I have my doubts that it will still be on top at the end of 2009. There is a lot of momentum around Python and Django now (with Django's 1.0 release and Google's App Engine support of Python) and I guess there will be some healthy competition during 2009 in that area. -- cmeerw.org
