Finally somebody's going to film this book. I've been whining "forever" about the absence of a Forever War movie. Now, according to Variety (by way of Ain't It Cool), it's in the works, with the redoubtable, apparently indestructible Ridley Scott directing. The plot summary they give is typically lame and distorted, in the manner of Hollywood pitch meetings since time immemorial: Book revolves around a soldier who battles an enemy in deep space for only a few months, only to return home to a planet he doesn’t recognize some 20 years later, Scott said. But could I summarize The Forever War with some Variety scribe sticking a microphone in my face? Probably not.

Replays showed that Holmstrom deflected Pavel Datsyuk's shot off the middle back post of the net and not the crossbar for his fourth goal.

A journalist draws on 561 notebooks to tell about the war in Afghanistan and Iraq In 1998, before the clarifying attacks of 2001 shocked the West into higher gear in its anti-terror efforts, Dexter Filkins was a reporter making trips into Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. Among the things he witnessed was a public execution at a Kabul soccer stadium, a sanctioned revenge killing by the brother of a murder victim in accordance with sharia law. Filkins had been given a choice seat, midfield, as the loudspeakers proclaimed, "Nothing that is being done here is against God's law," and a departing spectator later told him, "In America, you have television and movies—the cinema. Here, there is only this."

Ryan Smyth had two goals and Milan Hejduk extended his season-opening goal streak to six games, leading the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-3 victory against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night. The Avalanche had only one shot on net until the 11:28 mark of the game, when Smyth scored on a one-timer from 15 feet in the slot after getting a touch pass from Paul Stastny. Drew Doughty, the second overall pick in the June draft, was badly beaten by Smyth as the 14-year veteran left wing deftly stickhandled past him in the left circle and flipped his second goal of the game over Jason LaBarbara's glove at 16:32 of the period for a 4-2 Colorado lead.
